Malaysian Plover
Status
Scarce resident, exclusively on sandy coastal beaches. Nests on the ground above the high tide limit.
Identification
Small plover with white collar, variegated pale brown upperparts and pale pinkish or yellowish legs. Smaller than Kentish Plover, with rounder body, shorter bill and proportionally longer legs. Plumages similar year-round. In flight, similar pattern to Kentish but wings rounder; toes project (just) beyond tail. Ad ♂︎: Complete black collar, long breast patches which often form complete band across chest. Ad ♀︎: Black parts on male replaced by orange or dark brown. Juvenile: Paler than adult female with shorter breast patches.
Similar Species
Smaller than Kentish Plover and White-faced Plover, with rounder body, shorter bill and proportionally longer legs. Longer lateral breast patches than White-faced Plover. In flight, similar pattern to Kentish Plover and White-faced Plover, but wings rounder; toes project (just) beyond tail.
Typical behaviour
Chases prey with long, rapid runs interspersed by sometimes lengthy pauses. Feeds mainly on small crabs. Often perches on driftwood and hides near beach debris when threatened.

Range
In Peninsular Malaysia, resident on many sandy beaches on the east coast south to the Singapore Strait. No documented records from the west coast. In Bornean Malaysia, present on sandy beaches. Scarce or absent from offshore islands.
Seasonality
Resident year-round.
